Military history and commemoration for schools

Education specialists and historians at the Australian Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) gather and present stories and images of veterans’ service. We do this to recognise and commemorate those who served Australia in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

Some of our work is presented as high quality learning materials for school students that are designed to suit the Australian Curriculum. Books and education resources are available free to download from this site. Hard copies might be available in your local school library.

Recognition for our work

Our products have been recognised internationally and nationally for their excellence.

Our website

In 2018, we were shortlisted amongst other governments’ digital services from 11 countries for the Boston Consulting Group’s GovCX Awards.

We receive consistent positive feedback from our users. Participants in the 2018 website survey reviewed our site as ‘4 stars’ out of 5. A new project is underway to redesign the site to make it easier for students to find and use its content.

Our books

From a field of 444 entries, the Children’s Book Council of Australia listed 2 of our books amongst 18 ‘Notables’ in its 2018 Book of the Year Eve Pownall Award:

Both these books are part of the Century of Service series, which is available free to download on our site. You can purchase hard copies in the Australian War Memorial Shop.

Our videos

We released a 7-minute animation, Here They Come: A Day to Remember, along with 8 short videos about the symbols of commemoration. They support our successful ‘big book’ and help children to understand the different perspectives of Anzac Day.
